Acne Q & A

What is acne?

Acne is a condition caused by the overproduction of oil by the oil glands of the skin. The oil that normally lubricates the skin gets trapped in blocked oil ducts along with dead skin. Bacteria then gets inside, too, resulting in pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads on the surface of the skin. You can also develop deeper lesions called cysts.

What are the signs of acne?

The most vulnerable areas of the skin contain the places with the largest number of oil glands. The forehead, chest, shoulders, and back are vulnerable. For example, the forehead has more than 2,000 oil glands alone.

The primary symptoms of acne you may notice include:

  • • Pimples – small skin swellings that sometimes contain pus
  • • Blackheads – dark formations on the skin that are a mix of oil and cells
  • • Whiteheads – small white or flesh-colored bumps
  • • Cysts – closed sacs beneath the skin that contain fluid or semisolid substances

Acne is common in adolescence and the early 20s, but many older adults and children have acne, too. Women in their 30s and 40s often develop acne because of, for example, hormone fluctuations.

Why should I seek treatment for acne?

Acne doesn’t just run its course. Treatment minimizes the effects and prevents side effects such as scarring. With treatment at Dr. Rachel R. Kushner Dermatology, you can avoid feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable due to the skin condition.

What acne treatments are available?

Prescription topical medications that help control exacerbation of your acne are available. Your provider also can prescribe oral medications that help control acne, especially red, swollen pimples, and cysts. Medications available include:

  • • Antibiotics to control bacteria
  • • Hormonal birth control
  • • Isotretinoin, a prescription ingredient for severe acne under the name brands Accutane® and Claravis®

In the case of large cysts, your provider may also recommend intralesional corticosteroid injections, which can cause lesions to shrink and even disappear entirely. Skin resurfacing treatments and microdermabrasion also help resolve acne appearance and scars.

If you are bothered by acne, both in terms of how it looks but also how it feels, call Dr. Rachel R. Kushner Dermatology for treatment or schedule an appointment online.
