Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer, with more than a million cases in the U.S. each year.  It is also possibly the most preventable.  Sun exposure is by far the most common cause of skin cancer.  By limiting your exposure to the sun, especially if you have skin cancer in your family, you can reduce your likelihood of having skin cancer.

Skin cancer is not only highly preventable, but also highly treatable; however, it needs to be detected early.  Examine your body regularly for the sudden appearance of growths, moles, sores or skin discolorations or for the change in appearance of any existing skin condition.  Bring these things to Dr. Kushner’s attention so that she made have them tested.  You should schedule yearly exams as well to increase the chance of early detection.

There are a number of different treatment options the doctor may choose for you if you are found to have skin cancer.  Various types of surgery, radiation therapy and topical chemotherapy are all possible cures.  The doctor will select the treatment based on the type of cancer, its size and location and your personal needs.
